How to Match your Necklace to your Outfit’s Style and Neckline

A beautiful necklace is a staple of any girl’s wardrobe. But it’s always important to make sure that your necklace doesn’t detract from your outfit – or, conversely, that your necklace isn’t swamped by your clothes. While there are no steadfast rules on how to wear a necklace well, and part of the fun of putting together any ensemble is trialling various accessories with it, here are a few simple, yet contemporary, tips from your local independent jeweller on how to match your necklace not only your outfit, but also to your neckline:

Necklaces for: v-neck outfits

This is one of the easiest types of neckline to get right: v-neck tops look simply stunning with pendant necklaces. It’s an easy rule to follow, but if you like to break the rules occasionally, why not ask your local jeweller about layering several pendant necklaces of varying lengths, some of which will hang below the neckline of your top? It’s a modern twist on this traditional look.

Necklaces for: turtlenecks

Turtleneck tops were designed to showcase statement necklaces: if you’re wearing a simple turtleneck in a plain colour under a work suit, for example, a bold, statement piece – perhaps oversized pearls or brightly coloured beads – will bring a simple outfit to life. But don’t confine statement necklaces solely to turtlenecks; their name says it all, and they are designed to attract attention, so feel free to wear a bib-style statement necklace underneath collars on shirts, or with special occasion wear for red carpet glamour. Your local jewellery shop will stock a variety of statement pieces in a range of colours and materials, so you’re bound to find a necklace to suit your needs.

Necklaces for: round neck outfits

The simple answer to necklaces to match round neck tops are, of course, round necklaces, but this doesn’t mean that the look has to be boring. Why not layer several round necklaces to mirror the line of the garment? They can be made of several different materials – think large wooden beads teamed with a vintage style crystal piece and perhaps a chunky chain too. The more eclectic the better! Ask your local independent jeweller to help you mix and match round necklaces to create a diverse look.

Necklaces for: crew line tops

A great way of jazzing up a simple crew line jumper or t-shirt is with a special collar necklace. This type of necklace is rather contemporary, as they are designed to look like a crystal shirt collar – the perfect thing to bring some sparkle to an otherwise simple top! Why not ask your local independent jeweller whether they could custom make a collar necklace, just for you?

Necklaces for: strapless outfits

The answer to necklaces with strapless tops? Well, there isn’t really an answer to this question, as it’s often best to not wear a necklace with a strapless top or dress. Instead, bring such an outfit to life with large earrings and bangles from your local jewellery shop. Or you could, of course, break all of the rules, and bring out that statement necklace again....part of the fun is the trial and error, after all!
